Maternity Suite Amenities

The Maternity Suites at Kishwaukee Community Hospital provide many of the soothing comforts of home.

Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum Suites

  • All private luxurious suites
  • Large private bathroom/shower with hair dryer
  • Single room experience from labor through going home
  • Spacious rooms with windows
  • Tastefully decorated
  • Comfortable seating for family and visitors
  • Overnight accommodations for support person
  • Hotel-style room service dining

  • Individual refrigerators in each room

  • VCR/DVD player

Security

  • Locked unit with advanced infant security system
  • Computerized bands for infants that sound alarms if removed from unit
  • Corresponding ID bands for mom and baby

Medical Care Services

  • Obstetrician and anesthesiology services available on-call 24 hours a day
  • Level II designated maternal and infant care
  • Specialty trained registered nurses in-house 24 hours a day
  • Private neonatal procedure room in nursery
  • Advanced fetal monitoring
  • Additional care available through certified lactation counselors, social workers, registered dietitians, and spiritual leaders

Hospital Preparation

  • Check your insurance coverage, including pre-certification requirements.
  • Choose a doctor for your baby.
  • Keep a list of important phone numbers near the phone.

After You Leave

  • A nurse will visit you a few days after you leave for a postpartum follow up visit.
  • If you have any questions, call the KCH Maternity Suites.

Pack your bag for your hospital stay

  • Gowns and a lightweight robe
  • Comfortable slippers
  • Bras and lightweight underwear
  • A loose, comfortable going home outfit
  • Personal hygiene supplies:
  • (deodorant, toothbrush, hairbrush, hair care products, maxi pads, make up, etc)
  • Address book with family and friend’s phone numbers
  • Going home outfit for baby
  • Baby blankets
  • A federally-rated safe car seat
  • Camera with batteries and film
  • Magazines, book or journal

Your Labor Experience

What to do when you’re in labor…

  • Call your doctor if your water breaks or you think you’re in labor.
  • Begin timing and recording contractions.

During early labor, stay at home...

  • Take a shower or bath.
  • Go for a walk
  • Rest if you’re tired.
  • Use various positions to remain comfortable.
  • Focus on breathing slowly or in a pattern.
  • Try to remain calm and relaxed as much as possible.

When you arrive at KCH…

  • Between 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m., enter through the Main entrance (first canopy)
  • After hours, enter through the Emergency Department (second canopy)
  • Notify the reception-desk employee of your arrival.
  • You will be escorted to the Maternity Suites.

Having a baby is a special time in your life. It can be both exciting and overwhelming. Kishwaukee Community Hospital offers Childbirth and Infant Classes to better prepare you for childbirth.

Lamaze®      Also available: Lamaze® Weekend Express

For the expectant mom and her labor companion to take in the third trimester. Learn the signs and stages of labor; breathing, relaxation and comfort techniques, variations of labor, including cesarean births, take a tour of the KCH Maternity Suites. Labor companions learn to provide physical and emotional support during the birthing process.

Lamaze® Refresher

For expectant parents who have attended a prepared childbirth class for a prior birth and wish to attend a “refresher” class. Attend on Saturday of the weekend Express Class from
10 am - 3 pm only. Lunch is provided.

Cesarean Birth Class

Topics include anesthesia, preparation and recovery. Attend on Sunday of the Weekend Express Class from 10 - 11:30 am.

Childbirth Education for Young Moms

A six session class for young moms ages 15 - 21. Learn about pregnancy, nutrition, labor and delivery, breastfeeding and baby care in this class with your support person and other young moms.

Infant Classes

Kishwaukee Community Hospital understands the challenges you face after giving birth. Let us help you develop skills to care for your expanding family.

New Baby Care

A class for first time parents, grandparents and other caregivers to learn the basics of newborn care. Bathing, diapering, feeding, crying and sleeping are just a few of the topics we will explore.

Infant Safety & CPR

Learn about infant safety including childproofing, poison prevention, and SIDS. A certified American Heart Association Instructor will teach CPR and choking rescue for infants less than 1 year of age. This is not a certification course.

Sibling Class

Bring siblings and tour the KCH Maternity Suites. Children should be at least two years old to benefit from the class.

Breastfeeding Class

Learn the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby, getting started, preventing common problems and how to pump and store breast milk. Dad/suppport person is welcome to attend. The KCH Maternity Suites also has Medela breast pump rentals and other products for nursing mothers.
