Molly was 44 years old and pregnant when she went to see David Sui, MD, an Ob/Gyn physician on staff at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Molly had previously suffered through 15 miscarriages and was desperate to carry this baby to term.
Dr. Sui talked with Molly, did a thorough medical history and ordered several tests. He discovered that, unusually, she lost all of her pregnancies in the second term. Molly was diabetic and had high blood pressure.
Knowing she was at risk for losing this pregnancy, Dr. Sui decided to place a cerclage on Molly’s cervix. This procedure involves placing a stitch high up around the cervix to try and keep it closed during a pregnancy at high-risk of miscarriage.
The procedure was successful and Dr. Sui carefully oversaw Molly’s care until her pregnancy reached 20 weeks. At this point Dr. Sui coordinated with physicians at the University of Chicago Hospital to have Molly admitted for close monitoring and care during the remainder of her pregnancy. Molly developed pre-eclampsia later in her pregnancy, resulting in the need to deliver her little baby girl at 31 weeks gestation.
