Maria was in labor when she went to the Maternity Suites at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. During her labor, her baby’s heart tones began falling. The skilled Maternity Suites staff at KCH knew something was wrong. They immediately paged Maria’s doctor, Meera Atkins, MD. Through a very swift coordination between Dr. Atkins, the anesthesia, operating room and maternity suites departments, Maria was rushed in for an emergency c-section. Dr. Atkins delivered the baby in less than one minute after she made the incision, which was only a total of five minutes after the initial fetal distress was identified.
During the delivery, Dr. Atkins discovered that the umbilical cord had a true knot in it. If the knot had tightened, the blood supply to the baby would have been greatly decreased or completely cut-off. The situation could have caused very severe problems and grave consequences for the newborn. But thanks to the close monitoring and quick response from Dr. Atkins and the skilled staff at KCH, Maria’s little baby was born healthy and without any problems.
